Here is a selection from Christmas Time, the compilation put together by Chris Stamey of ’80s North Carolina jangle-pop band the dBs. The holiday album has been released in three different incarnations: it was originally an EP in 1986, and in 2006 it was re-released (with extra tracks) as Christmas Time Again. I have the second version, which was released in 1993. The disc’s title track is a jaunty addition to the dBs canon, their “Holiday Spirit” has a classic chorus, and occasional REM collaborator Peter Holsapple contributes a lovely version of “O Holy Night.” The song I return to each year, however, is a little more bittersweet (but those Carl Wilson-style harmonies get me every time). This is “Christmas Is The Only Time (I Think of You),” by Stamey and Wes Lachot.
