The Santa Cruz Warriors basketball team defeated the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Sunday night to win their first-ever NBA Development League title. (I know most people call it the D-League, but the abbreviation sounds awful.) It’s the second consecutive year that the team has appeared in the finals, impressive when you consider that it’s only the team’s third year in Santa Cruz. (Since the Warriors faced the Mad Ants both times, I give plenty of props to Fort Wayne as well.) I’m thrilled for the team and the city, and wish similar results for their NBA affiliate team, the Golden State Warriors, in their current playoffs.
Some of you may shake your heads at all the sports coverage lately, and long for the bookishness of past posts. Take heart, my fellow bookworms: since their inception, the Santa Cruz Warriors have championed the city’s literacy and children’s reading programs. As someone who always dreaded P.E. class, I feel vindicated now!
