Song In My Head #42: “Cool It Now” by New Edition

Some point to  “Popcorn Love” as the quintessential New Edition single, but I will always give that honor to “Cool It Now.” This 1984 gem is a beautiful bundle of contradictions. It revels in its ’80s production touches, and yet sounds fresh decades later. It’s a jaunty bubblegum tune that’s full of minor chords. (Only the Bee Gees have managed to make minor chord progressions sound so poppy, at least to these ears.) In its full glory “Cool It Now” is nearly six minutes, yet I always wish it were longer when it ends. (I hate to deprive you all of the classic video, but the single version chops out too much of the song. Accept no substitutes!)
