Song In My Head #43: “Detention Girls” by Sex Clark Five

I first discovered the SC5 through Lost In The Grooves co-editor Kim Cooper, who extolled the virtues of their 1987 Strum & Drum! album in an essay for the book. In a 2006 interview, New Pornographers tunesmith Carl Newman declared the Five to be “unsung heroes.” The Huntsville, Alabama band’s gimmicky name and odd album covers likely deprived them of their deserved following in the ’80s. Nevertheless, since their catchy, quirky songs slot perfectly into the indie-rock stratosphere, the band soldiers on to this day.

I almost opted for the Five’s equally addictive “Red Shift,” which has been sharing my brain’s real estate with “Detention Girls.” In the end, I chose the rollicking latter tune. Perhaps one of you can tell me what those girls are yelling in that frenetic middle section…
