Song In My Head #44: “Strange Powers” by The Magnetic Fields

The Magnetic Fields have produced an extraordinary number of songs (and that’s not counting those Stephin Merritt has written for his various side projects, such as the Gothic Archies and Future Bible Heroes). However, I particularly enjoy this track from 1994’s Holiday. “Strange Powers” is also the Magnetic Fields song most beloved by Soft Cell’s Marc Almond. I heard Almond confide that information to a Magnetic Fields concert audience in 2000, right before he sang a gorgeously semi-operatic version of the song as a guest vocalist. While I wish I could find a video of that online, I’ve always found Merritt’s deadpan, careworn voice to be an intriguing contrast with the sardonic yet romantic lyrics…
