Song In My Head #46: “Burning House of Love” by X

When X’s “Burning House of Love” was released in 1985, many fans of the venerable L.A. punk band decried the video as a desperate bid for crossover MTV success. Nevertheless, it gave me the first exposure to X’s music, and I adore the song to this day. Part of it has to do with my favorite John Doe vocal performance, which conveys romance, regret, and menace beautifully. Michael Wagener’s epic production sweeps cinematically, building drama without becoming overblown. I see “Burning House of Love” as the spiritual precursor to Neko Case’s 2006 classic “Hold On, Hold On,” and I mean that as a huge compliment. (I can’t be the only person who yearns for Case to cover “Burning House of Love.” She’d be perfect!)
