Song In My Head #59: Of Montreal’s “Fun Loving Nun”

The Athens, Georgia band has gone through many genres and incarnations, releasing fourteen albums (including Innocence Reaches just last week) in the process. While I’ve enjoyed watching Kevin Barnes’ development into an innovative musician and mesmerizing electro-glam-rock frontman, I confess that I love Of Montreal’s exuberant pop period best. My favorite of these releases is 1999’s old-timey-yet-timeless concept album The Gay Parade, and chief among its tracks is the classic “Fun Loving Nun.” Everything about it has me hitting “repeat” each time: the frenetic electric organ, the genuinely joyful lyrics, the impressive ascending chords that accompany Barnes’ gleefully tongue-twisting delivery. It’s pure happiness distilled into music.
