It’s true that in the Jesus and Mary Chain discography, 1998’s Munki isn’t greeted with the same enthusiasm as Psychocandy or Darklands. However, at least one Scottish rock legend begs to differ. In the documentary Upside Down: The Creation Records Story, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie proclaims Munki to be a great album. I’d never doubt Gillespie’s authority, especially since he was the Chain’s original drummer. So, I took a listen, and the lead track has embedded itself into my consciousness ever since. (While Jim Reid’s lyrics are unusually sunny, the line “I’m not evil, but I’m not good” is the one that always jumps out at me. Hmm…)
ETA: Sloan’s Patrick Pentland also loves Munki. Good enough for me!
